provide 与 supply 作“供给，提供，供应”解时，两词意思相近。

 (1) ①provide指“供应(所需之物)”，特别是生活必需品，常含有免费供应之意。所用句型是provide sth. for sb., provide sb. sth., provide sb.with sth.。

• His firm provides him with a car.
  他的公司给他配了一辆车。
• The Red Cross provides food and shelter for disaster victims.
  红十字会向灾民提供食物和住所。

②provide用作此意时，也可接双宾语。

• Mr. Jackson provided her a dainty cap and apron.
  杰克逊先生为她提供了一顶轻便的帽子和围裙。

③provide还作“规定”解。

• The agreement provides that the tenant shall pay for repairs to the building.
  协议规定，租户应支付该建筑物的维修费用。
• A clause in the agreement provides that all disputes shall be arbitrated by an independent body.
  协议规定，所有争议应由一独立的机构进行仲裁。

④provide可用作不及物动词，与against连用，表示“为(防范)……做好准备；预防(困难、危险等)”。

• The sailors provided against the coming storm by furling all sails.
  水手们卷起了所有的船帆，预防即将到来的风暴。
• Have you provided against a fuel shortage next winter?
  你为下一个冬天的油料短缺做好准备了吗？

⑤provide也可与for连用，表示“为……提供生活费；养活”。

• If I could get work I should be only too willing to provide for them.
  如果我能找到工作，我将非常愿意养活他们。

⑥provide for还表示“为(潜在的困难)做准备；防备”(另见“prepare...”条)。

• Tom worked hard to provide for his old age.
  汤姆努力工作为年老时做准备。
• When cutting the cloth for my suit, leave enough at the edges to provide for my getting fatter.
  裁剪我的套装时，要在边上留有充分余地以防我发胖。

⑦provide for也可作“规定”解。

• The treaty provides for the eventual self-government of the territory.

• It is not provided for in the agreement.
  这未在协议中做出规定。

 (2) supply意为“供应、提供(所需或所要求之物)”，所用句型是supply sb. with sth., supply sth.for sb.,有时也用supply sth. to sb.。

• Trees can supply/provide shade in summer.
  树能在夏天提供阴凉。
• The butcher supplies us with meat. (=The butcher supplies meat to us.)
  这个卖肉的向我们提供肉。
• Is milk supplied to each house in bottles in your country?
  在你们国家牛奶是以瓶装形式向各家供应吗？
