(1) ①propose意为“建议,提议”,较正式,多用于书面语,常与名词、动名词或that引出的虚拟从句连用,也可与不定式连用。
- I propose (that) a short rest before we start climbing the mountain.
我建议稍微休息一下,再开始爬山。 - After we had finished eating, he proposed to set off immediately.
我们吃完饭,他提议立刻出发。 - I propose Mr. Hill (should) be the chairman.
我提议选希尔先生为主席。
②propose还可作“打算(做某事)”解,后接不定式或动名词。
- What do you propose to do/doing with the letter?
你打算怎样处理那封信?
③propose还可作“求婚”解,用作不及物动词。
- Jack proposed to Mary and she accepted his proposal.
杰克向玛丽求婚,玛丽接受了。
(2) ①suggest意思是“建议,提出(作为建议)”,可与名词、动名词或从句(从句中谓语多用should加动词原形或省掉should,直接用动词原形)。
- He suggested to me one or two suitable people for the committee.
他向我建议了一两个适合进委员会的人。 - I suggested (that) he adapt himself to his new conditions.
我建议他要使自己适应新环境。
②suggest可作“提出(看法),指出,暗示”解,这时从句中不用虚拟。
- The police suggested that the motive for the crime was jealousy.
警方认为犯罪的动机是出于嫉妒。 - Some critics have suggested that the author is not a novelist at all, but an essayist.

③suggest还作“使人认为;表明;使人想起”解,可接从句,从句中不用虚拟,也可接名词。
