(1) ①quote是“引述，引用(别人的话、书中的话等)”，但并非一定指引用原话或原文。

• He is quoted as having said that there will be another conference for solving the crisis.
  有人援引他的话说不久将举行另一次会议来解决这场危机。
• The reporter quotes the leader as saying, “We, only we, can decide our own fate.”
  这位记者引述这位领导人的话说：“我们，只有我们，才能决定我们自己的命运。”

②quote还可作“提及，举出(例证、数字、经历等)”。

• The driving instructor quoted the statistics on accidents to his pupils.
  驾驶教官向学员们列举出交通事故方面的统计数字。
• Is Shakespeare the author most frequently quoted from?
  莎士比亚是最经常被引用的作家吗？

③quote表示的“引述，引用”，并不一定是为证明自己的观点。

• The poem he quotes with disapproval seemed to be particularly good.
  他带着不赞成的情绪引用的这首诗在我看来却格外好。

④quote还可作“报价，开价”解。

• What price would you quote me for that painting?
  关于那幅画你给我的报价是多少？
• He quoted the commodity at $500.
  他为该商品报价500美元。

 (2) ①cite通常是为了证明自己的论点而举出例子，如书报、文件或某人的话，可以是原话，也可以是大意。

• It's no use citing the Bible to someone who doesn't believe in God.
  对不信上帝的人引用《圣经》是没用的。
• He cited lines from Marx in support of his argument.
  他引用马克思的几行文字来支持自己的论点。
• The minister cited the latest crime figures as proof of the need for more police.
  这位部长引用最近的犯罪数字作为需要更多警察的佐证。

②cite还作“举出(例证等)”解。

• The judge cited a previous case in support of/to support his argument.
  这位法官举出以前的一个案例来支持自己的论点。

③cite也可表示“(正式)表扬；嘉奖(某人勇敢)等”。

• After the battle against the floods, many officers and soldiers were cited for their excellent deeds.
  这场抗洪斗争之后，许多官兵因为表现优秀而受到嘉奖。
