summit, top, peak 与 climax 这些词都有“顶点”的意思。

 (1) summit指山的顶峰，引申指可达到的最高水平。

• They reached the summit of Mount Everest after years of planning and countless failures.
  经多年的筹划及无数次的失败，他们终于登上了珠穆朗玛峰顶。
• This book is the summit of 20th century literary criticism, he claims.
  他声称这本书是20世纪文艺批评的巅峰之作。

 (2) top是普通用词，可指包括人或物或其他任何事物的最高点或顶点、顶部。

 (4) climax指事物发展中的最高点，常暗示一个上升过程的结束。

• Tension was building up to a climax in this troubled city.

• The climax of the play is reached when the hero dies.
  戏在主人公死亡时达到了高潮。
