(1) ①suspect是“疑心，猜想，疑有，怀疑”，对一件事情的真实性倾向于相信、认为可能。
- I suspected that something was wrong with the engine.
我怀疑发动机出了毛病。 - I suspect that he's already left for Paris.
我猜他已动身去了巴黎。
②suspect后可接不定式(主要是to be) 的复合结构，用其他动词时，多用不定式的完成式或进行式。
- They suspected him to be my son.
他们疑心他是我儿子。 - I suspect him to have written the letter.
我怀疑是他写了这封信。 - She suspected him to be dying.
她猜他快死了。
③有时用suspect sb. of (doing) sth.。
- They suspected him of telling a lie.
他们怀疑他在说谎。 - He was suspected, and accused, of selling state secrets to a foreigner.
他被怀疑并被指控向外国人出卖国家机密。 - I've been suspected of many things in my life, but no one has suspected of me being dishonest.
在我一生中，我曾被怀疑过许多事情，但还从没有人怀疑过我不诚实。
④suspect还表示“隐隐觉得、想到”。
- No one suspected that she was so seriously ill.
没人想到她会病得这么严重。 - He could not have suspected who she was.
他不可能想到她是谁。
⑤此外suspect还有对某事物的价值、真实性表示“怀疑”的意思。用于此意时可与doubt换用。
- I suspect/doubt the truth of his excuse for being absent from school.
我对他逃学理由的真实性表示怀疑。 - I do suspect his story about what he did when the robbery took place.
我确实怀疑他所讲述的在抢劫发生时他的所作所为。
(2) ①doubt意为“怀疑，不相信”，认为不可能，倾向于“不相信”。可接名词，在肯定句中可接whether或if从句，也可接that从句，接that从句时意为“恐怕不会”。
- I doubt the honesty of the newspaper reports.
我不相信报纸报道的真实性。 - I doubt (that) he will be able to come.
我不相信他会来。 - I doubt whether/if he will succeed in going abroad.
我认为他不可能出得了国。
②doubt在否定句、疑问句中可接that, but, but that, but what从句。
- I never doubted for a moment that you were right in doing that.
我一向相信/从不怀疑你那样做的正确性。 - We don't doubt but that/but what the truth will come out.
我们相信真相终会水落石出。
③doubt有时与of连用，表示“对……抱怀疑或悲观的态度”。
- I have never doubted of her success in her career.
我从不对她事业上的成功抱任何怀疑的态度。
④有时doubt接近fear, suspect。
- I doubt that the two countries will not be able to reach an agreement.
恐怕这两个国家将不会达成共识。
(3) query除作“盘问，询问，质问”解外，还表示“对……怀疑”，后接名词、代词，也可接whether/if从句，这时接近doubt。
- I query his trustworthiness/honesty.
我对他的可信性/诚实表示怀疑。 - I'd like to query several points that you made in your talk.
我想就你谈话中的几点质疑。 - I query whether/if his word can be relied on. (也可用doubt)
我怀疑他的话是否可靠。
(4) question较接近query，除作“盘问，询问，提问”解外，还表示“怀疑，对……提出疑问”，这时可与doubt换用，其后可接名词、代词或whether/if从句。
- We all question/doubt his leadership abilities.
我们都怀疑他的领导能力。 - I very much question whether such a policy will be successful.
对这项政策能否成功，我非常怀疑。
