(1) surround可作“包围，环绕”解，也可用于引申场合。

• The Japanese troops on the island were surrounded by the Allied Forces and soon surrendered.

• Mountains surround the little town on all sides.

• They are surrounded with/by dangers and their reform is at stake.

 (2) ①besiege多指部队包围、围困、围攻，也指其他环境下的“包围，围着”。

• Troy was besieged by the Greeks for ten years.
  特洛伊被希腊人围困达10年之久。
• Autograph seekers besieged the film star.
  寻求签名的人围着这位影星。

②besiege也用于引申场合。

• Besieged with fears , he decided to seek the aid of a psychologist.
  由于深受恐惧的困扰，他决定求助于心理治疗专家。
• People besieged the newspaper with letters about one of its recent reports on the reform of the allotment system of houses.

 (3) encircle意为“环绕，包围，围成一圈，绕着转”；作“包围”解时可用于军事方面，也可用于其他场合。

• The invading troops were encircled by the Eighth Route Army.

• The city is encircled on three sides by the sea.
  这个城市三面环海。
• Many artificial satellites encircle the earth today.
  如今，许多人造卫星在绕着地球运转。

 (4) ①enclose指用墙、篱笆“围起，包围”。

• She does not want to become a housewife enclosed in a world of drab routine.
  她不愿成为一个终日陷于大量、单调的日常琐事之中的家庭妇女。
• The baby enclosed in its mother's arms is fast asleep.
  在妈妈怀中的婴儿睡得很香。
• We are thinking of enclosing the garden with a hedge to keep stray animals off it.
  我们正在考虑用一个篱笆将花园围住，以防动物误闯进去。
• This word should be enclosed with quotation marks.
  这个词应该加上引号。

②enclose又作“(随信)附上，附在里面”解。

• Enclosed , please find a cheque for $2, 000.

 (5) envelop指“包围，笼罩”，可用于引申意义。

• Envelop the baby in blankets before going out.

• The mountain peak was enveloped in clouds.
  山顶云雾缭绕。
• What caused the Premier's sudden death has been enveloped in secrecy from start to finish.
  总理突然去世的原因自始至终被保密。
