(1) 这些短语都可表示“把……扔、抛、投入……之中”。前两个含有“随便、不经意地”意味，后两个含有“猛力投”的意味。

• The office workers competed to see who could best toss a ball of waste paper into the basket.
  办公室工作人员比赛看谁能把废纸团投进垃圾篓(谁的命中率最高)。
• The soldier hurled/threw the bomb into the enemy gun post.
  这个战士把炸弹扔进了敌军的火炮阵地。

 (2) 这些短语又可表示“把(某人)投入(监狱)”之意，常用被动语态。

• The criminal was tossed/hurled flung/thrown into prison for his crime of murder as soon as he was found guilty.
  这个罪犯一被判定犯有谋杀罪就被投进监狱了。

 (3) toss into, throw into, fling into还可作“插(话)，插嘴”解。

• She sat silently, flinging/throwing/tossing the odd word into the conversation from time to time.
  她默默地坐在那里，不时地插上句怪话。
• I wasn't able to throw/fling a word into the argument the whole time I was there.
  他们在争论，可我在那里从头到尾连一句话也插不上。
