(1) upward(美), upwards(英)为副词时,表示“向上”。
- We climbed upward/upwards to the top of the mountain.
我们向上爬/一直爬到山顶。 - Entering the room, I saw him lying on the floor face upwards .
进屋后我看到他脸朝上躺在地板上。 - Prices continue to climb upwards .
物价继续攀升。
(2) 这两个词还表示“(年龄等)……以上”。
- Children of 5 years and upward/upwards must pay car fare.
五岁以上的孩子必须付车费。 - Children of seven years and upward/upwards were refused admittance for want of room.
由于地方狭窄,不再接收七岁及七岁以上的孩子。 - TV sets in this store cost 3,000 yuan and upwards .
这家商店的电视机卖到3000元或以上。
(3) 用作形容词时,只能用upward。
- We walked along an upward path and soon reached the temple.
我们沿着一条向上的小道而行,很快就到达了那座庙。
(4) upward/upwards of意为“……之上”,等于more than。
- Present at the meeting were upwards of five hundred heroes and model workers from all walks of life.
出席会议的有五百多位各行各业的英雄和模范人物。 - To buy this set of furniture, I'll have to pay upward/upwards of four months' pay.

(5) ①up to可表示“向高处,接近”。
- We climbed up to the top of the hill.
我们爬上了山顶。 - She came up to me and asked me my name.
她走上前来询问我的名字。
②up to还可表示数量,意为“多达”。
- The furniture cost me up to $3,000.
这家具花了我多达3000美元。 - Up to 5,000 people were present at the Benefit Performance for Relief Fund sponsored by the Cultural Department and the Civil Administration Department.
