区别辨析 worth, worth (one's) while, worthy of, worthy to do sth. 与 deserve

(1) worth可作形容词,常接名词、代词、动名词或量词作宾语,有以下几个意思:

①价值为……

  • A: Can you guess how much the shirt is worth ?
    你能猜出这件衬衫值多少钱吗?
    B: It's worth at least $5.
    它至少值5美元。

②价值与……相符;顶得上。

  • The coat is not at all worth what is charged for it.
    这件上衣根本不值这一要价。
  • A bird in hand is worth two in the bush.
    一鸟在手胜过二鸟在林。/多得不如现得。

③“值得”,后接名词、代词、动名词。

  • I think the book well worth publication.
    我认为这书很值得出版。
  • Don't lock the door. It isn't worth the trouble.
    不用锁门,不值得这么麻烦。
  • He is not worth helping.
    他不值一帮。
  • Some people asked the question whether it was worth (making) the effort.
    有些人问这么一个问题:这件事是否值得费这个劲。

④拥有(家产)。

  • He himself didn't know what he was worth .
    连他也不知道自己有多少家产。
  • He was worth millions of dollars.
    他身价高达数百万美元。

⑤worth有时又可作名词,意为“价值;(多少)价值的物品”。

  • The worth of this book was not realized until 50 years after his death.
    直到他死后50年,人们才认识到这本书的价值。
  • Will you change this pound note for a pound-worth of pennies?
    你能把这张钞票换成一英镑面值的硬币吗?
  • She bought 5 dollar's worth of books.
    她买了价值为5美元的书。

⑥worth还可作“价钱,价格;财产,资产”解。

  • The painting's worth was estimated at upward of half a million dollars.
    这幅画的价值据估计值50多万美元。
  • The appraiser put a worth of thousand dollars on the ring.
    估价人员给此戒指估价为1 000美元。
  • His net worth was reckoned at over a thousand million dollars.
    据估计他的净资产超过10亿美元。

 (2) worth (one's) while意为“值得(做某事);有好处”,后接动词不定式或动名词。

  • Do you think it is worth (its) while to cycle so far to see the football match?
    你认为这么远骑自行车看这场足球赛值得吗?
  • It's not worth (its) while quarrelling with that man. Let's go.
    不值得与那个人争吵,咱们走吧。
  • I'll devote my life to the sacred cause. This is worth while .
    我要将我的一生献给这个神圣的事业,这样做很值得。

 (3) worthy of意为“值得……;配得上……;应得到……”,通常接意义较好的词。

  • He was a state leader worthy of great respect.
    他是一位值得尊重的国家领导人。
  • There occurred nothing worthy of being mentioned. (worthy to be mentioned)
    那儿没发生什么值得一提的事情。
  • Do you think you are worthy of her?
    你认为你配得上她吗?

 (4) worthy to do意为“值得……;配得上……”,常接不定式的被动式。

  • I don't think he is worthy to be given the position.
    我认为他不配被给予这个职位。

 (5) ①deserve意为“值得……;应得到/受到……”,后接表示称赞、批评、惩罚等意思的词,可接名词、代词、不定式动名词或从句。

  • She said she didn't deserve the praise.
    她说她不值得这么称赞。
  • Do you think you deserve your wages?
    你认为你应得到你的这些薪水吗?
  • The success you've achieved deserves to be congratulated on .
    你获得的成功值得庆贺。
  • That fellow certainly deserves to be punished/to be sent to prison.
    这个家伙当然应受惩罚/被关进监狱。
  • The boy richly deserves whipping.
    这孩子真该挨一顿鞭子。
  • He said that he really didn't deserve I should be so kind to him.
    他说我对他这么好,他实在不敢当。

②可用于deserve well of sb.和deserve ill of sb.短语,前者意为“应受到(某人)良好对待”;后者意为“应受到(某人)惩罚”。

  • Mr. Jones deserved rather better of his employer than to be pensioned off at a few pounds a week.
    琼斯先生应该受到雇主更好的待遇才是,而不应一周只给几镑钱就把他打发走。
  • He deserves ill of his country .
    他应受到国家的惩罚。

③现在分词deserving用作形容词,可与of连用,意思是“应受到……;值得……”,可接意义好的词,也可接意义坏的词。

  • He committed a crime deserving of a severe punishment.
    他犯了应受重罚的罪。
  • Such people will absolutely not be deserving of trust.
    这种人绝对不值得信任。
