(1) ①would 表示过去的习惯,通常是不很规则的习惯,是较为正式的用法。
- He would sit there for hours sometimes, doing nothing at all.
他有时常常一连几个小时坐在那儿,什么也不做。
②would常与sometimes, often, always, frequently, for hours连用。
- In the three years that we lived there, we would often go to the brook to catch fish.
在我们住在那儿的三年间,我们常到小溪里去捉鱼。
(2) ①used to指“过去常常”,常指较规则的习惯,用于口语时,有时可以与would换用。
- The little town is not what it used to be.(不用would)
这小镇不再是过去的样子了。 - I used to write poetry when I was your age.(不用would)
我在你这个年龄时常常写诗。
②构成谓语表示过去习惯性动作时,带would的句子通常不放在故事开头,而是用在中间。
- We used to swim every day when we were children. We would/used to run down to the lake and jump into it.
在儿时我们每天都去游泳,我们常跑向湖畔,跳入湖里。
(3) could be表示“过去(有时会……)”,一般指不甚规则的习惯。
- He could be annoying at times, if you let him, but usually he was very helpful.
如果你由着他来,他有时会很淘气,但通常他非常乐于助人。 - Mary could be pretty trying when a child.
玛丽小时候很令人伤脑筋。
(4) can be表示“有时会……”,一般指现在不甚规则的习惯。
- My son can be very trying sometimes.
我儿子有时很让人伤脑筋。 - Cycling in the city streets can be a very nerve-racking business.
在城市的街道上骑车有时是一件令人神经紧张的事。
(5) ①will也可表示现在不甚规则的习惯。
- He will sit at the window for hours, sometimes reading and sometimes writing.
他在窗前一坐几个小时,有时读书,有时写东西。
②要表示现在规则性的习惯,要用一般现在时。
- I (usually) get up very early.
我通常很早起床。 - I am in the habit of getting up early.
我习惯于早起。
