The Old Man and the Sea
The Old Man and the Sea is a well-known novel written by the American author Ernest Hemingway in 1951 in Cuba, and published in 1952. It was the last major work of fiction to be produced by Hemingway and published in his lifetime. As one of his most famous works, it centers upon Santiago, an aging fisherman who struggles with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. The Old Man and the Sea was awarded the Pulitzer Prize 注 for Fiction in 1953 and was cited by the Nobel Committee as contributing to the awarding of the Nobel Prize in Literature to Hemingway in 1954. The success of The Old Man and the Sea made Hemingway an international celebrity.
At first glance, the story appears to be an extremely simple story of an old Cuban fisherman, who catches an enormously large fish then loses it again. But, there's much more to the story than that. The novel opens by telling the reader that Santiago has gone eighty-four days without catching a fish. He is so unlucky that his young apprentice 注 , Manolin, has been forbidden by his parents to sail with him. Hemingway wanted to use the story of the old man to show the honor in struggle and to draw biblical 注 parallels to life in his modern world. Santiago lives according to his own observation: “Man is not made for defeat ... man can be destroyed but not defeated.” In Hemingway's portrait of the world, death is inevitable, but the best men (and animals) will nonetheless refuse to give in to its power.
