The story is set in the Yukon during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush — a period when strong sled dogs were in high demand. The novel's central character is a dog named Buck, living happily in California's Santa Clara Valley as the pet of Judge Miller. He is stolen by the gardener's assistant and sold to fund a gambling addiction. Sold into the brutal existence of an Alaskan sled dog, Buck quickly learns to survive cold winter nights and the pack society. Buck eventually beats the lead dog and becomes the leader of the team. One night, Buck finds that his beloved master has been killed by a group of Yeehat natives. He eventually kills the natives to avenge Thornton, and he then follows the wolf into the forest and answers the call of the wild. At the end of the story, Buck returns each year as the Ghost Dog to mourn at the site of Thornton's death.
