The Phantom of the Opera is a masterwork collaborated by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Charles Hart. Andrew Lloyd Webber is responsible for music and Charles Hart for lyrics. Its basis is the French novel Le Fantôme de l'Opéra by Gaston Leroux, and its central plot revolves around a beautiful singer, Christine Daaé, who becomes the obsession of a mysterious, disfigured musical genius. Phantom, the musical genius, lives in the sewers underneath the Paris Opera House. He loves the chorus singer Christine very much. Also he privately tutors her and makes her lead roles by terrorizing the rest of the theater staff. However, Christine doesn't love him at all and falls in love with her childhood acquaintance Raoul. Then the Phantom kidnaps her and imprisons her with him angrily. In the end, the Phantom lets her go and vanishes with only his mask left.

The Phantom of the Opera has enjoyed great successes with the opening in the West End in 1986 and on the Broadway in 1988. And by 2011, over 130 million people in 145 cities in 27 countries have watched it. It won the 1986 Olivier Award and the 1988 Tony Award for Best Musical, and Michael Crawford (in the title role) won the Olivier and Tony Awards for Best Actor in a Musical.
