John Winston Lennon (1940-1980) was an English musician, singer and songwriter who rose to worldwide fame as a founder member of the rock band the Beatles. The Beatles were an English rock band, formed in Liverpool in 1960, who became one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed bands in the history of popular music. With Paul McCartney, he formed a songwriting partnership that is one of the most celebrated of the 20th century.

Born and raised in Liverpool, as a teenager Lennon became involved in the skiffle craze; his first band, the Quarrymen, evolved into the Beatles in 1960. Lennon revealed a rebellious nature and acerbic wit in his music, writing, drawings, and on film and in interviews. He worked in many genres ranging from folk rock to psychedelic pop, often incorporating classical and other elements in innovative ways. Some of his songs were adopted as anthems by the anti-war movement. Participants in a 2002 BBC poll voted him eighth of “100 Greatest Britons”. Rolling Stone ranked him 38th of “100 Greatest Artists of All Time”. He was appointed “Member of the Order of the British Empire” (MBE) with the other Beatles in 1965. The Beatles were collectively included in the Time magazine's compilation of the 20th century's 100 most important and influential people.
