Roman Holiday is a romantic comedy released in 1953 by Paramount Pictures. It stars Gregory Peck as a reporter and Audrey Hepburn as a royal princess of some unspecified European country. It is directed by William Wyler who still has a record of more people getting to the Oscar sweepstakes for his films than any other director. Hepburn won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance; the screenplay and costume design also won.

Anne, the crown princess, embarks on a highly publicized tour of European capitals. When she and her royal entourage arrive in Rome, she begins to rebel against her restricted schedule. One night Anne sneaks out of her room, hops into the back of a delivery truck and escapes. She runs into an American newspaper reporter, Joe Bradley, stationed in Rome. In order to make an exclusive interview with the Princess, Joe pretends that he doesn't recognize her and offers to give her a guided tour of Rome. Through all this, Joe falls in love with her. But a relationship is impossible. Anne finally bids farewell to Joe and returns to the embassy. Joe decides not to write the story.
