The Economist is an English-language weekly magazine owned by The Economist Newspaper Ltd. and edited in offices in London. For historical reasons The Economist refers to itself as a newspaper, but each print edition appears on small glossy paper like a news magazine, and its YouTube channel is called Economist Magazine.
《经济学人》是经济学人报业有限公司旗下以英语发行的周刊,在伦敦的办公室编辑。出于历史原因《经济学人》认为自己属于报纸类,但它用铜版纸印刷出来的版本就像一本新闻杂志,并且它的YouTube频道也被称为“经济学人杂志”。
The Economist has long been respected as “one of the most competent and subtle Western periodicals on public affairs”. The magazine was a major source of financial and economic information for Karl Marx in the formulation of socialist theory. Its logo was designed in 1959 by Reynolds Stone.

The Economist claims that it “is not a chronicle of economics”. Rather, it aims “to take part in a severe contest between intelligence, which presses forward, and an unworthy, timid ignorance obstructing our progress”. It takes an editorial stance of classical liberalism and economic liberalism which is supportive of free trade, globalization, free immigration and cultural liberalism (such as supporting legal recognition for same-sex marriage). The publication has described itself as “a product of the Caledonian liberalism of Adam Smith and David Hume”. It targets highly educated readers and claims an audience containing many influential executives and policy-makers.
