Knives and forks may be used in American or continental fashion, but the latter is much more sensible. In the continental style, the fork remains in the left hand, fork tines down, and the knife in the right, at all times. Dessert eaten continental-style implies the same system, with the fork in the left hand and the spoon (or knife, as the case may be) in the right. If one is eating something with only a spoon or a fork (ice-cream or cake, for instance) one holds it in the right hand.
刀叉的使用可以分美国式和欧洲大陆式两种,比较而言,欧洲大陆式更合情理。按照欧洲大陆人的方式,叉子总是拿在左手,叉齿朝下,而刀总是拿在右手。吃甜食时也一样,左手持叉,右手持匙(有时持刀)。如果进餐时只用一把匙或一把叉(比如吃冰激淩或蛋糕时),那就总是拿在右手。

When a plate of food has been finished or the diner has had all he wishes, he places the fork and knife (but only if he has used one or both) on the plate, sharp side of the blade facing in, the fork tines down, to the left of the knife. Used silver is never placed on the table or left in a cup. A soup spoon is left in a large soup plate. Unused silver is left on the table.

Napkins are placed on the lap, entirely open if they are lunch size or in half, folded in the long way, if they are dinner napkins. Guests wait until the hostess has taken up hers before placing their own on their laps. Napkins are tucked in at the neck only for children or by anyone eating on an airplane who wishes to protect his clothes. For a lobster dinner, everyone should tuck his napkin under his chin too. The napkin should not be thrown in a heap on the table when the meal is over. One should fold it casually.
餐巾铺在膝盖上,如果是午餐餐巾,应把它完全展开,如果是宴会餐巾,则沿窄的一面对折成长条形。客人要等女主人拿起餐巾时才能把自己的餐巾铺在大腿上。把餐巾塞在脖子里只适合于孩子或在飞机上用餐的旅客,以免弄脏衣服。当然,吃龙虾宴时,客人都应把餐巾塞在下巴下。用餐结束后,餐巾不能揉成一团扔在桌上,而必须顺手折好。
