有人问到这样一句话：

为何Earth之前不加定冠词the?

作“地球”解时，earth之前一般加the,如：

(2)The earth revolves round the sun.

但同其他天体连用时，则应用不加the的大写第一字母的Earth。上述句（1）即属于这种情况：Earth与Mars连用。注意习语on earth中的earth并不意指“地球”，而是意指“世界”。

在这个习语中，earth为不可数名词，其前不用the，更不大写第一个字母。作“地球”解的earth也有其前不加the的情况，但往往与句子的韵律有关，这里就恕不举例了。

顺便提一下，earth作为物质名词意指“土”或“土壤”时，其前亦不加the（特指时除外）。但当earth意指“地面”（the ground）时，则其前可加或不加the，例如：
