有一读者问： living, alive 和 live 这三个形容词有何不同？
粗略地说， living 与 alive 同义（皆指“活着[的]”，与 dead 相对），只是用法不同。 living 一般常用作定语，置于名词之前，如：
(1)All living creatures must die some day.
(2)He is the living image of his father. （living 在此用作比喻， the living image of 意谓“活像”）
(3)Later when I went deeper into the Red areas I found in those young people the living spirit of the Red Army. （living 在此亦用作比喻）
alive 常用作表语或后置定语， 如：
(4)Is the man alive or dead?（ alive 用作表语）
(5)He's still alive . （alive 用作表语）
(6)He is the greatest scoundrel alive . （alive 为后置定语）
alive 还可以用作主语补足语和宾语补足语，如：
(7)Luckily he retured alive .（alive 为主语补足语）
(8)Keep the fire alive . （alive 在此用作比喻，为宾语补足语）
living 与 alive 有时可互换使用， 如上面所举的例（6）中的 alive 即可换作 living， 变为：
(9)He is the greatest living scoundrel.
但在很多情况下，二者并不能互换，如例（2）和例（3）中的 the living image 绝不可变作 the image alive, the living spirit 同样也不可变作 the spirit alive， 因为它们已成为习语。关于 living 与 alive 各自的习惯用法还有不少，这里就恕不细说了。
live 源自 alive （只是失去其首字母a），与 alive 同义，但强调“不是死的 （not dead)”的概念。其用法则与 living 相同，即常置于名词（如动植物）之前，如：
(10)I bought two live plants in flower pots.
(11)There are many problems in transporting live animals.
请注意 live 除意谓“活（着）的”之外，还被引申出一些其它含义，常用的有如：
(12)a live wire 通电的电线
(13)a live broadcast 现场直播
