有一读者问:高二英语课本有这样一句话:
(1)Some are put into cans and shipped all over the world.
依我看,shipped 后面应加上 to,译作“被运送到”才对,是不是?
这里的 shipped 之后不可加上 to,因为 all over the world 中的介词 over 已有“遍及”的意思。应当记住, over, under, behind, in, on, between, inside 等介词不但可表示静态,指位置,而且也可表示动态,指方向。好的词典在所给的释义中也往往指出这一点,如有一本英英词典给介词 under 的第一个释义就是 in or to a lower place than (在或向较低的位置)。现再举一些例证如下:
(2)The news soon spread all over the city. (over 意指“传遍”)
(3)The insect crept under the door. (under 意指“到……下面”)
(4)The dog ran behind his master. (behind 意指“到……的背后”)
(5)Throw it in the fire. (in=into)
(6)He jumped on the horse. (on=onto)
(7)John let nothing come between himself and his work. (come between 意指“插到……的中间来”)
(8)Don't let the dog inside the house. (inside 意指“到……里面来”)
