有一读者问： 下面两句中的 times 是什么词类：
(1)Three times three is nine.
(2)This house is three times as large as that one.
曾经，辞典学家们都认为 times 是一复形名词，都将上面两句中 three times 看做名词短语用作状语，分别修饰其后的 three 和 as large。 现在仍有不少词典抱有这样的观点。但当今有的词典学家已提出一种新的观点。它们认为上述例（2）中的 times 确实是一复形名词， three times 在此用作状语，如同 much as large as...中的 much 用作状语一样。但如将例（1）中的 times 也看作名词从而把 three times 看作状语就有点牵强了。状语怎能修饰相当于名词的 three 呢？再说 times 还可以后接名词，如：
(3)Force equals mass times work.
它还可以用在这样的句子里：
(4)One times one is one.
这里的 times 显然都不可能归入名词一类。那么它是什么词类呢？答案是：它应归入介词一类。和它相似的还有 double, twice, less, minus, plus 等，其在下面句子中皆应看作介词：
(5)The boy was double the size of his sister.
(6)He is twice her size.
(7)Five minus （或 less ）three is two.
(8)Two plus two is four.
