有一读者问: 有这样一句话:
(1)She stood in the window, looking out on the traffic on the street.
如何解释这里的in呢?
window有二义:一是窗户(the opening in a building, car, etc.),具此意义的window之前用in时,乃指窗户或窗框本身内,例:
(2)A windowpane is a piece of glass in a window .
另一义是窗口(the space inside a window),指窗下一空间。上述句(1)中的in the window即意指“在窗口”,再如:
(3)There was an arrangement of books in the window .
(4)Suddenly I saw a light burning in a window .
(5)She's got some wonderful plants in the window .
window所指的空间可以很大,如商店里的橱窗,例:
(6)How much is that suit in the window ?
