为何用for而不用of?

有一读者问:某期《英语世界》有两个句子,我有不解之处:

(1)The principal port for the second longest river system in the world was located within this territory.

这里为什么用for而不用of?

(2)There, far from view of passing motorists and hidden from encroaching civilization.

译者说encroaching是形容词,让我不解。为什么不说encroaching of civilization?

上述句(1)中的for表“限制”,即“限于此而非彼”。for the second longest river system的含义是:仅对the second...river system而言,而非其它river system。 再如:

(3)She is the people's deputy for our district. (for our district仅指“我们区”,而非其他区)

如用of,则只表“属于”,并无“限于此而非彼”的含义。

上述句(2)中的encroaching civilization的重心是civilization(即所谓“中心词”),encroaching是现在分词,用作定语(也可以说它在此相当于形容词),其义为“进行侵吞的”。

亦可说hidden from the encroaching of civilization,但其重心变成了encroaching(名词化的动名词)。
