用in与不用in

有一读者问: 有这样两句话:

(1)But in time, the performer becomes bored singing the same songs in the same way year after year...

(2)Perhaps, but one is hard pressed to come up with the names of those who have done their thing their way and succeeded in the fame game.

句(1)用了介词in,句(2)则不用,这是为什么?

在当代英语中,介词in和其他一些介词(如for等)一样,也有三种情况:一是一般已省去不用,二是不可不用,三是可用可不用。介词in后接意指“方式,方法”的名词way时亦是如此。一是不用in,上述句(1)中的their way(按照他们认为正确或恰当的方式)即是一例。再如:

(3)Have it your way.

(4)I'm going to handle this my way.

二是不可不用in,上述句(2)中的in the same way即是一例,再如:

(5)He spoke in a kindly way.

(6)She answered in a very polite way.

三是可用in亦可不用in,如:

(7)Do it (in )this way.

(8)Do it (in )your own way.
