有一读者问： on the tree与in the tree有什么区别？
介词on的本义是“在……的上面”，这里的“上面”指“表面上”，也就是说须与一物的表面相接触。所以，on the tree的意思是“在树的表面上”，实例如：
(1)Fruits grow on trees.
(2)There are a lot of knots on the tree.
介词in的本义是“在……之中（或内）”，即“在……的包围之中”。in the tree的意思是“在树的枝叶包围之中”，其义与on the tree并不相同，虽然二者皆可译作“在树上”。
实例如：
(3)I see a bird in the tree.
(4)Tom is up in the tree.
说鸟在树上一般都指鸟在树的枝叶包围之中，故应用介词in。如强调鸟在树的表面上，也可用介词on，如有一位英国文学家曾说道：
(5)The woodman takes an axe and cuts down the tree on which the nightingale sings...
