有一读者问：if...not 与 unless 是否可以互换？它们有无不同？
在条件句中，if...not 与 unless 确是常常可以互换使用，而其意义并无什么不同，如：
(1)If you don't change your mind I won't be able to help you. （亦可用 unless）
(2)Unless you correct a great many times, you will never be able to write good English. （亦可用 if...not）
但 unless 的语气较强，所以在最后通牒中多用 unless，如：
(3)Unless the management improve their offer, there will be a strike.
但下面句子中的 if...not 则不可代之以 unless，因为 unless 总是意味着 except on the condition that（除非）：
(4)I'll be surprised if he doesn't win.
由于同样的原因，unless 一般也不可用以表非真实条件，所以下面一句中也必须用 if...not：
(5)She'd be better company if she didn't complain so much.
反之，有时 unless 也不可代之以 if...not。这种 unless 常引导一个用作添补词语的从句，置于主句之后，并常用破折号隔开，如：
(6)I couldn't have got to the meetting on time — unless I had caught an earlier train.
这里的 unless 从句意味着“除非我赶上了早一班火车”。所以说话人未能按时到会。如果将 if...not 代替了 unless，写作：
(7)I couldn't have got to the meeting on time if I hadn't caught an earlier train.
其意则恰恰相反，变成了“我如不是赶上早一班火车，就不会按时到会了”。由此可以看出，if...not 和 unless 的区别有时还会是很大的，不是吗？
