有一读者问：《英语语法手册》中，从属连词的定义是引导从句的连词。但下面句子中引导省略从句的 if, while 和 though 是否是从属连词呢：
(1)Yet there is general agreement that US auto industry will eventually emerge in healthier, if leaner, condition.
(2)While respected, he is not liked.
(3)He spoke firmly though pleasantly.
上述三句的情况，并不完全相同。例（2）中的 while respected 是一省略或缩略的让步状语从句，其原结构是 while he is respected,所以 while 在此显然是一从属连词。
但例（1）与例（3）就是另外一回事了。这两个句子里的 if leaner 和 though pleasantly 并不是省略了什么的从句，所以 if 和 though 并不是从属连词。那么它们是什么连词呢？
我们说，在这里它们和 and, or, but, yet 等一样，也是等立连词。如将例（3）改写为：
(4)He spoke pleasantly but firmly.（或用 yet）
即可明显地看出这一点。所不同者，if 和 though 用作等立连词时，则只能连接单词和短语，而不能连接句子。这样的等立连词，除了 if 和 though 外，还有一个比较文气的 albeit （=even though），比如例（3）也可以改写为：
(5)He spoke firmly albeit pleasantly.
