这里用单数动词是英美人常犯的错误

有一读者问: 有这样两道辨错题:

(1) Mr. Snow is one of those men (A: who appears) to be (B: friendly) however, it is very hard to (C: deal with) (D: him).

(2) Marion is only one of the students (A: in the class that) never (B: admit making) a mistake, (C: even when it) (D: is pointed out) to him.

上述第一道题的答案是A错,应改为appear;第二道题的答案是B错,应改为admits making。上述答案对否?

上述答案是对的。句(1)按其句意来讲,who之后显然应用复数动词appear,因为who的先行词在此不是one,而是men。句(2)按其句意,that之后显然应用单数动词admits,因为that的先行词不是students,而是one。

但应指出,上述句(1)用单数动词appears是英美人常犯的错误,再如:

(3)This is one of the doors that was damaged.

按理说,这里不应用was而应用were,因为that的先行词显然是doors(当然也有可能是one,但这种情况较少)。有人说这里之所以用单数动词was是因为受了one的影响的缘故。由于受到one的影响而用单数动词的情况还有如:

(4)More than one question was asked.
