多用is

有一读者问： 有这样一道填空题：

There_________a pen, a pencil in the pencil box.

答案为are, is是否更合适些？

这里用are或is都可以，但口语中似乎多用is，因为其后是a pen。顺便说一下，这里的逗号最好改为and。
