有一读者问：上海交通大学主编的《英语》第一册（下）第12课中有这样一句话：
One is to put the stages one on top of the other.
如何分析 one on top of the other?
one on top of the other 是一习语，用作方式状语，修饰 put 。这一习语一般不必进行内部分析。如做语法分析的话，它是一种由“one + 介词 + the other”构成的独立结构。这种结构还有 one after another, one by one 等。与此相似的还有由“名词 + 介词 + 名词”构成的独立结构，如 face to face, hand in hand, book in hand 等。
