在英国说“哥哥”用elder brother，说“姐姐”用elder sister，不用older brother和older sister。

elapse用作名词现在很不普通，如通常不说the elapse of half a year，最好把elapse改作lapse。

eke out的正确意思是“补充（进款等）”。

either在用作代词或形容词的时候指“两个中间的任何一个”，如Either of the two will do和You may put the chair on either side of the table。

eighties, twenties, thirties等词都可以指一个人的“从第80年到第89年”，“从第20年到第29年”，“从第30年到第39年”等

eight of them是“他们中间的八个”，the eight of them是“他们八个（指全体）”。

egoism（自我主义）指不断地想到自己，是纯粹的自私，egotism（自私自利）是不断地谈到自己，是“自高自大”。

egg指“一个一个的蛋”，并不统指“蛋”，如不可说I like egg，该把egg改作eggs。

在用作“努力”解的时候，effort后面接不定式。

effective用作“（法令等）被施行的”解是美国用法。例如：The order became effective on 4 April.

Our opinion is to the effect that...（我们的意思是…）和His reply is to the effect that...等句子里的to the effect是公文里的陈套语，往往不如省去的好。
