下面第一句是正常的英语，第二句不妥，第三句是错误的：

composition在用作“作文”解的时候是抽象名词，前面不可加上a或the，也没有复数形式。

compliment不论用作名词或动词都可能是诚恳的致敬或只是形式上的致敬。

complicate用作形容词现在很不普通，该用complicated。

inferiority complex（自卑情结），maternal complex（母性情结）等表达方式里的complex是类名词

complain是不及物动词，后面接of，如He complains of the naughty boy, He complains of the food和He complains of indigestion（他说他消化不良）。

可以说He is competent to teach grammar。不可说He is so competent as to teach grammar。

competency不及competence普通。

competence（能力）后面接不定式，如his competence to conduct the school。

关于compensate和compensate for的用法，下面几点该注意：

说画圆形用的“两脚规”用compass, compasses或pair of compasses都可以。

not to be compared with（或to）作“比不上…的”解，用with或to都可以。
