深入解读
从上面的两个外刊例句不难发现， endeavor 一词有两种拼法，其中， endeavor 主要用于美式英语，而多一个字母 u 的 endeavour 主要用于英式英语。
该词源自古法语 dever （责任），由部分翻译自古法语 mettre en deveir 的短语 put (oneself) in dever （使成为某人的责任）演变而来，15世纪初出现在英语中原指“为达到目的而付出的痛苦”。
这个概念发展到今天主要作为正式用语使用，表示“努力、尝试”，多指为了达到某一目的而作出的持久的、坚持不懈的甚至终身的艰苦努力，强调努力的认真与决心，因此也可以引申指艰巨而重大的“活动、工作、事业”，比如：
- 尽管我们尽了最大的努力，但我们还是在最后的关卡上倒下了。
In spite of our best endeavours, we fell at the final hurdle. - 徒步穿越北极是人类探索领域的一次壮举。
Crossing the North Pole on foot was an epic feat of human endeavour.
用作动词时，也是作为正式用语表示“努力、尽力、竭力”，也就是尽最大努力、认真地克服困难去做某事，常意味着努力履行职责，比如：
- 他在竭力借助这场战争的惨败来取代他软弱的上司担任总统。
He is endeavouring to supersede his feeble boss as president by leveraging the debacle of the war.
