区别辨析row、queue、line、rank与file

row、queue、line、rank与file这些名词均含“列、队、排”之意。

row : 指单独的一列，也可指平行的数行中的一行，而不论是横或纵。

• We sat in a row at the back of the room.
  我们在屋子的后面坐成一排。

queue : 指人们为做某事而有顺序排成的队，在等的过程中不断向前移动。

• 我只得排队等着上厕所。
  I had to join a queue for the toilets.
• Until VFS opened its Mumbai office, applicants had to queue for an average of five hours in the sweltering heat outside the American consulate.
  VFS 在孟买开设分公司之前，申请人要顶着酷暑在美国领事馆外排平均五个小时的队。

rank和file常为军事用语，前者指肩并肩排列整齐的士兵横排，后者指纵队。

• They watched as ranks of marching infantry passed the window.

• They set off in file behind the teacher.
  他们跟在教师后面鱼贯出发。
