该词源自拉丁语 frux （本义指“水果、农产品”，喻指“价值、成果、成功”），先后经拉丁语 frugi （指人特别是奴隶“有功绩或价值的、值得的、严肃的、节俭的”，指事物“温和的、素淡的”）、拉丁语 frugalis 和法语 frugal 于16世纪中期进入英语。
主要也是用来表示“节约的、节俭的、俭省的”，强调没有丝毫奢华和挥霍，尤其是在衣食住行等生活方面只消耗必要的食物或金钱，避免任何不必要的浪费，通常还含有简朴、克己和知足的积极意味，比如：
- 节俭度日
to live in a frugal way/manner - 因收入不高而节省
to be frugal with one's modest income
