around, round, about 在表示某些意义时相似，有时甚至可换用，但用法并不完全相同。
(1) ①表示环行运动：around, round均可用来表示圆周上或弧形道路等上的运动或位置。前者较多用于静止的位置，后者较多用于运动，现在的趋势是将二者互换使用。在美式英语中around要比round更常用。about在现代英语中一般不用于此意。
- The moon moves around/round the earth.
月亮绕着地球转。 - They planted a lot of trees around the school.
他们在学校周围种了很多树。 - He walked around the table, touching glasses with the guests.
他围着餐桌，跟客人们碰杯。
②around 和round还可构成其他一些短语。
- around/round the corner
拐角处 - sit around/round a table
围着餐桌就座 - turn around/round
转身 - around/round the clock
24小时(昼夜) 不停地
(2) 用于分配、旅行、游览等场合。around和round可用于表示把东西分给一个集体中的每个人或者到一个地方的各处(all or most parts)。美国人喜欢用around。about不用于此意。
- Will you hand around/round the papers?
你把这些文件分发一下好吗？ - There aren't enough to go around/round.
不够分一轮的。 - Would you like to walk around/round the university this afternoon?
今天下午，你想在大学校园里各处走走吗？ - At the age of seventy, he sailed around/round the world single-handed.
在70岁时，他单枪匹马绕地球航行了一周。
(3) 表示不确定的运动、位置等。
上述三个词均可表示“各处(here and there)；在附近(nearby)；在许多地方(in many places)”等。在美式英语中，只有around常用。
- Yesterday we spent a whole day wandering around/about downtown.
昨天，我们花了一整天逛了商业区。 - When the accident happened, he was standing around/about.
事故发生时，他正站在附近。 - Don't have your clothes scattered around/about the room.
不要把衣服扔得房间里到处都是。
＊around, round， about另一个意思是“在……附近(near)；在这个地区(in the area)”。
- Is John around/about?
约翰在这里吗？ - Excuse me, but would you please tell me if there is a pub anywhere round here?
打扰一下，请问这附近什么地方有小酒馆吗？
注意： 用于此意时，round作为介词比作为副词更常用。
(4) 表示愚蠢的或无目的的活动。
around(在英式英语中)和 about用于组成短语，描写愚蠢的、无组织的、无目的的或浪费时间的活动。
- Stop fooling around/about . Let's get down to some work.
不要瞎胡闹了，咱们着手做些工作吧。 - I spent the day messing around/about in the garden.
我在花园里闲逛，打发了这一天。
(5) 表示“大概，大约”。
around和about可用作“大概”，“大约”，“不确切”解。在表示时间的短语中，round在英式英语中也是可用的。
- Building the house cost around/about one and a half millions of dollars.
建这座房子花费大约150万美元。 - I should think she's around/about thirty-five.
我想她大约三十五岁左右吧。 - I'll be back around/round/about lunchtime.
我将在午饭前后回来。
(6) round可用作形容词，意为“圆的”。
- She had large, expressive, black eyes and a round face.
她有一对大大的、富有表情的黑眼睛和一个圆圆的脸蛋儿。
