(1) 这三个短语均可表示“以……开始”；用commence with 比较正式。

• The day began/started/commenced with bad news, and looks like getting worse.
  今天一开始就是坏消息，而且看起来情形好像还在变得更糟糕。
• Let's begin/start/commence with this work.
  咱们着手进行这项工作吧。

 (2) to begin with, to start with可表示：

①起初。

• It was fine to begin/start with and then it started to rain.
  起初天气晴朗，但后来开始下雨了。

②首先。

• Our difficulties are many. To begin/start with , we can't get the fund for the project.
  我们的困难有很多，首先，我们拿不到工程资金。

 (3) beginning/starting with意思是“从……起/开始”，常用作定语或状语。

• Can you give me the figures for the twelve months beginning/starting with last April?
  你能给我从去年4月份起12个月的数据吗？
• Let's now hear the students read their poems, beginning/starting with Mary.
  咱们现在听同学们读自己的诗，从玛丽开始。

 (4) start with 还可表示因为震惊、恐惧等做出迅速的神经质的动作，意为“惊起，惊跳”。

• The girl started with fear as the shadow of a man fell across her arm.
  当一个男人的影子落在她胳膊上时，这女孩吓了一跳。
