(1) by和near均可用作介词，by的意思是“就在……旁边”，比near可能更“靠近”些。

• We live near the sea.(perhaps five kilometers away)
  我们住在靠海的地方。(大概离海5 000米远的地方)
• We live by the sea. (we can see it)
  我们就住在海边。(我们能看见海)

 (2) near作介词时可有比较级。

• His opinion is nearer (to) my own than any other.(用to时，near为形容词)
  他的意见比其他任何意见更与我的接近。
• We're a little nearer the end of our journey.
  我们的旅行越发接近尾声了。

 (3) 在close to/by短语中，close为副词还是形容词，要视情况而定。

• He lives close by (the post).(副词)
  他住在(邮局)附近。
• There's a bus stop close to the school.(形容词)
  学校附近有一个汽车站。
