(1) clothes是“衣服”的总称,可指“上衣,裤子,衬衣”;该词无单数形式,“一套衣服”用a suit of clothes,“一件衣服”用an article/piece of clothes。
- He never changes his clothes — his trousers are filthy.
他从不换衣服,他的裤子很脏。
(2) cloth是用来制作衣服、窗帘等的材料,是不可数名词;但指用于清洁的抹布时,则是可数名词,如:a cloth(复数为cloths)。
- What have you done with the dish-cloths?
你把洗碗抹布弄哪儿去了?
(3) clothing是含有集合意味的衣服的总称,不但包括衣裤,而且包括帽、袜、手套之类,等于汉语的“衣物”;该词无单复数形式,“一件衣物”用an article/piece of clothing。
- She usually spends half her income on clothing .
她往往把收入的一半花在衣着上。
(4) costume指代表某一时期、某一国家、民族、职衔、职业等特点的服装或其式样时,为不可数名词;指具体的这种衣服时,为可数名词。
- They were wearing their colorful national costumes , singing and dancing, to celebrate their festival.
他们穿着五颜六色的民族服装,唱着跳着,来庆祝自己的节日。 - The actors were in Victorian policemen's costumes .
演员们穿着维多利亚时代的警服。
(5) ①dress指衣服,特别是社交场合的穿着,为不可数名词。
- Boys do not care as much about dress as girls do.
男孩子不像女孩子那样在乎穿着。 - In this old play, the actors wear the dress of 100 years ago.
在这一古装戏中,演员们都穿着100年前式样的衣服。
②dress可指妇女、儿童所穿的衣衫,用作可数名词。
- The girls had grown nearly big enough to wear their mother's dresses .
这些女孩子已长大到能穿她们妈妈的衣服了。
(6) garment的意思也是“服装”,可指一件衣服的名称,是较斯文的说法。
- A new garment should be washed carefully.
一件新衣要小心地洗。 - Keep the receipt in case you should wish to exchange this garment .
你把收据放好,以防你想去更换这件衣服。
