(1) ① compare to是“把……比作;说……像……”。
- The poet compared the world to a great stage.
这位诗人把世界比作一个大舞台。 - Shall I compare thee to a summer's rose?
我可否把你比作夏日的玫瑰?
②compare to还可表示“(能)和……相比”,compare用作不及物动词,这时也可用with。
- Social life in a village cannot compare to/with that of a large city. But for peace and quiet, city life can't compare to/with life in the country.
一个村庄的社交生活无法与大城市的相比。但就祥和安静来说,城市生活却无法跟乡下生活比。
(2) ① compare with除表示“(能)和……相比”外,还表示“把……与……比较”,这时compare 用作及物动词。
- You can compare your translation with the model translation on the blackboard.
你们可以把自己的翻译与黑板上的标准译文比较一下。
②有时与favorably, unfavorably等副词连用,表示“与……比起来不错/不如”等意思。
- They compared very favorably with other people's boys and girls.
他们跟别人家的孩子比起来毫不逊色。 - She had always compared this place disadvantageously with England.
她总是拿这地方的缺点跟英国相比。
(3) equate to意为“把……等同起来;使……相等;认为……(与……)一样好”,也可用with, equate用作及物动词。
- You can't equate life in the city to life in the country.
你不能把城市生活与乡下生活等同起来。 - His poems cannot be equated with his plays.
他的诗歌不像他的戏剧那样好。 - It's foolish and unrealistic to equate money with happiness.
把金钱等同于幸福既是愚蠢的,也是不现实的。
(4) liken为及物动词,意为“把……比作;……就像”,与to连用。
- Jim was in many ways likened to Jack.
吉姆在许多方面和杰克很像。 - The youth is/are likened to the rising morning sun.
青年就像早晨初升的太阳。
(5) contrast with表示①“把……与……加以对比”,contrast用作及物动词;②“与……形成对照;与……相映衬”,contrast用作不及物动词。
- Contrast these imported goods with the domestic products and you'll see the difference is very apparent.
把这些进口商品与国内产品加以对比,你会看出差别是很明显的。 - The brilliant sunset contrasts with the gloomy woods.
灿烂的落日余晖与这幽暗的树林互相映衬。 - This cold weather contrasts sharply/strongly with last week's heat.
这种寒冷的天气与上周的炎热形成鲜明对比。 - This behavior of yours contrasts unfavorably with your stated principles.
你的这种行为与你所说的原则颇不一致。(比起来是有差距的)
