(1) country 有两个不同的意思，也可以说是两个不同的词，一为可数名词，意为“国家，祖国”，包括其疆土及居民；一为不可数名词，意为“乡下”，最常与定冠词连用(其反义短语为the town)，不能与不定冠词连用。

• After many years in Europe, he was eager to return home to his own country .
  在欧洲生活多年之后，他渴望返回自己的国家。
• My parents live in the country /in a nice part of the country .
  我的父母住在乡下/乡下一个很秀美的地方。

 (2) nation侧重指一个国家由共同的语言和历史凝聚在一起的民族。

• The whole nation is up in arms to fight against the aggressors.
  全民族武装起来抗击侵略者。

 (3) state侧重政权、国体等政治概念。

• Have you read Lenin's book The State and Revolution?
  你读过列宁的《国家与革命》吗？

 (4) land也可指“国家”，侧重指“国土”，有时作“地区”解。

• He wanted to return to the land his father came from.
  他想回到他父亲所离开的那个国家。
• China is a vast land , with a population of thirteen hundred millions.
  中国土地辽阔，有着13亿的人口。
