(1) dress用作动词,有两个不同意思:“穿着衣服”和“穿上衣服”。说某人穿着什么衣服,可用被动式to be dressed in (注意介词的使用,dress后不接衣服作宾语)。
- He was dressed in a dark suit at the meeting.
他穿着一件黑色西服参加会议。 - She was dressed in green and orange pyjamas.
她穿着绿色和橘黄色相间的睡衣。
①使用dress的主动语态(dress可用作不及物动词),常含有重复或习惯的意味,有时表示“穿某种特别的衣服”。
- She always dresses in green.
她总是穿着绿色衣服。 - He dresses well.
他穿戴讲究。 - He said he would go if he didn't have to dress .
他说如果无须特别穿戴他就去。
②dress表示“穿上衣服”时,可作不及物动词和及物动词,用作及物动词时,以人为宾语。
- It only takes me about five minutes to dress myself in the mornings.
早晨我只用大约五分钟就穿好了衣服。 - Could you dress the children for me?
你能替我给孩子们穿衣服吗?
③然而在口语中,说自己“穿衣服”,多用get dressed或put on(表示即时性动作,后接衣服为宾语,不用进行时),有时也用dress oneself。
- A: Don't hurry me, I am not dressed yet.
别催我,我还没穿好衣服呢。 - B: Get dressed and come downstairs at once!
穿好衣服,马上下楼来! - The child is still too young to dress itself .
这孩子还太小,还不会自己穿衣服。 - I put on my pull-over this morning because I thought it was going to be cold.
今天早晨我穿上了套头背心,因为我想天将变冷了。
④dress oneself有时还表示“打扮自己”。
- She always dresses herself with special care on Sundays.
星期天,她总是特别用心地打扮自己。
(2) ①wear可作“穿,戴”解,侧重状态。
- She was wearing a white shirt.
她穿着一件白衬衫。 - She was wearing two yellow flowers in her hair.
她头上戴着两朵黄色的花。
②wear还可表示“留发型、胡须;佩戴勋章、戒指、袖章”等。
- Isabel wore a jersey and her hair in a plait; she looked about 15.
伊莎贝尔穿着一件套衫,扎着一根辫子,看上去十五岁左右。 - I don't like the way she wears her hair.
我不喜欢她那发型。 - The lady was wearing a white shawl over her shoulder.
这位女士肩上披着一条白色披肩。
③wear还可表示“(人)带有某种表情;(物)显现什么样子”。
- His face wore a look of utter boredom.
他脸上显出一种十分厌倦的神情。
She wore/was wearing a pleasant smile. 她脸上带着一种甜蜜的微笑。
(3) put on作“穿上,戴上,披上,抹上”讲,为非持续性动作,通常不表示状态。
- He put his hat and coat on .
他戴好帽子,穿上外套。 - He put on his glasses to read the letter.
他戴上眼镜读信。 - She puts on too much face powder.
她扑的粉太多了。
(4) be in和have on也可作“穿着”解,表示状态。
- She has a green skirt on .
她穿着一条绿色裙子。 - She is in a green skirt.
