(1) 在brother, sister, son, daughter, grandson, grandchildren前通常用elder和eldest，而不用older和oldest。

• My elder brother was in a car accident last week.
  我哥哥上周出了车祸。
• The eldest daughter does all the housework.
  长女做全部家务。

 (2) 要注意elder和eldest在实际说话中的区别。如果说“my elder son”，那意味着“He's the older of my two sons”；如果说“my eldest son”，则表示“我”可能至少有三个儿子；如果说“my elder sister”，意味着“I only have one sister older than myself”。

 (3) elder和eldest也可用作名词。

• Who is the elder of you two?
  你们两个谁年龄大？
• He's my elder by ten years/He's ten years my elder .
  他比我大10岁。
• How old is the eldest?
  年龄最长者有多大岁数？
• One should respect his elders and betters.
  人人都应尊重自己的长者和上级。

有些人喜欢说older brother, older son等等，elder和eldest有渐渐从口语消失的趋势。
