(1) 在表示为了一个特别或专门目的时，用special/specially。

• You need a special licence to marry a foreigner.
  你需要办理特别许可证才能嫁(娶)给外国人。
• This is his special chair. No one else may sit in it.
  这是他专用的椅子。其他人谁也不可以坐。
• I've come specially to say good-bye to you.
  我是专门来向你告别的。

 (2) 当要表示某件事或东西不同寻常，特别重要时，两者均可使用。

• I took especial/special trouble over this job.
  我对这项工作格外用心。
• It's not especially/specially cold today.
  今天并不特别冷。

 (3) especially较常用于正式文体，特别是在介词短语或连接副词之前。

• Especially in Brazil, the black people have played a most important role in the development of the nation.
  特别在巴西，黑人在这个国家的发展中起了非常重要的作用。
• Noise is unpleasant, especially when you're trying to sleep.
  噪声很烦人，特别是当你试图睡着时。
• I expected a more enthusiastic welcome, especially considering it is the first time I have come here.
