(1) even off/out意为：①变得平坦；②(使)平稳，平坦或相等；③使匀开。

• The ground evens off/out on the other side of the mountain.
  在山的那一边，地势变得平坦了。
• Prices should even off/out when the crops are gathered.
  庄稼收获后价格就应该稳定下来了。
• Measures must be taken to even out the differences between social classes.
  必须采取措施消除社会各阶级间的差别。

 (2) ①even up意思是“拉平，使相抵；使相等，使平衡”。

• This payment should even up our account.
  这笔付款就把我们的收支扯平了。
• If you two sit at the other table, that should even up the groups.
  如果你们两个坐到另一张桌子旁，各组人数就平衡了。
• They gave us a bottle of whisky last Christmas, this year we'll give them some flowers to even things up a bit.
  去年圣诞节，他们给我们一瓶威士忌。今年我们送他们一些花来还礼。

②even up on (sb.)是“对(某人)做出回报”。

• We can even up on the Smiths by looking after their children next week.
  下周我们替史密斯家照看孩子，作为对他们家的回报。

 (3) level down/up意为“使下降/上升；使拉平”，在表示“使拉平”之意时，用down时，是把高的降低，用up时，是把低的提高。

• Some people believe that the extension of higher education has leveled down university standards.
  有些人认为，扩大高等教育降低了大学标准。
• The high rate of income tax has only succeeded in leveling down the incomes of the rich to those of the poor, with no advantage to the latter.
  所得税的高税率只使富人的收入向穷人的收入水平靠拢，但对于后者并无好处。
• The idea of equal education was to level up the general standard. Unfortunately, it sometimes seems to have had the opposite effect.

 (4) level off/out意思是：①(使)变平；②上升(涨)后开始平稳；(飞机)上升后开始平飞；③使(差距)拉平。

• They used a steamroller to level out the gravel roadbed before the concrete was poured.
  在浇灌混凝土前，他们先用一辆蒸汽压路机把砾石路基压平。
• Rub with sandpaper to level off/out the surface before painting.
  刷油漆前，先用砂纸把表面打磨平。
• After going up for several months, the cost of living is now tending to level off .

• We climbed steeply after take-off, and then leveled out at 25,000 feet.
