(1) exam是examination的缩略形式，特别在口语中常用。test也是常用的一个词，所指的测验可能不如examination正式，但在实际上常与examination换用。

• We have a test at the end of each month and an examination once a year.
  我们每个月底有一次测验，一年举行一次考试。
• The teacher gave us a test in arithmetic yesterday.
  昨天老师对我们进行了一次算术测验。
• Anyone who cheats in exams will be disciplined.
  任何考试作弊的人都将受到处分。

 (2) 参加考试的常用说法：attend an examination, enter for an examination(报名参加考试), sit (for)an examination, take an examination, do an examination。

 (3) 要表达考试结果，可以用pass the exam, get through the exam, succeed in the exam来表示“考试及格”；fail (in) the exam, fail to pass an exam表示“考试不及格”。

• I'm sitting my driving test next week.
  我下周将参加驾驶考试。
• I did D level in maths this summer. I took eight subjects and passed six, but I failed maths and physics。
  今年夏天，我的数学成绩得了D。我选了八门科目，过了六门，但数学和物理未及格。
