(1) 两者均为far的比较级，可用作形容词和副词。在英式英语中，两者均可用来指距离，意思上没有差别。

• On the farther/further side of the road there is a large shop.
  在路的那一边有一家大商店。
• Shanghai is farther/further away than Nanjing.
  上海比南京离这儿还要远。
• As the weather was threatening, we decided to go no farther/further .
  由于天气不好，我们决定不再向前走了。
• I'm too tired; I can't go any farther/further .
  我太累了，不能再向前走了。

 (2) 在美式英语中，只有farther用于距离。further用作副词，意为“进一步，再，更多”。

• There's no need for us to argue further about it.
  我们没必要为这事再争下去了。
• I'll enquire further into the question later.
  以后，我再进一步了解这个问题。

 (3) further用作形容词，作“进一步的，额外的，更多的”解。

• I have nothing further to tell you.
  我没有更多要告诉你的。
• If I can be of any further assistance, command me.
  如果我能提供进一步的帮助，请吩咐。
• There being no further business, the meeting was closed.
  因为没有其他事情，会议就结束了。
