(1) ①两词用作动词时，意为“适合”，但用在衣服方面时所指有所不同。如果说：Your clothes fit you well，是表示衣服大小合适，穿起来合身；如果说：Your clothes suit you well，是表示“衣服样式、颜色适合，穿着好看”。
- Red and black are colors that suit me very well.
红色和黑色是很适合我的颜色。 - That suit is best that best suits me.
适合我穿的衣服就是最好的衣服。 - Every shoe fits not every foot.
并非每只鞋都合脚。
②fit表示“(衣服)合身时”，也可用作不及物动词。
- His clothes fit very well.
他的衣服很合身。
(2) 两词其他用法如下：
①fit可表示“(使)适合”，用作及物动词和不及物动词。
- His manners don't fit his important new position.
他的行为举止不适合他的重要的新职位。 - He did not quite know what to say that would fit the occasion/circumstances.
他不很了解在这种场合他该说些什么。 - Military training fits men for long marches/to make long marches.
军事训练使士兵能进行远征。 - This course will fit you to do the job/for the position.
这一课程会使你胜任这项工作/使你适合这一职位。 - We all have to make efforts to fit ourselves to the requirements of our jobs.

②fit也可用过去分词作表语。
- I think he is not fitted to the task.

④fit表示“(给)装上，配上”，用作及物动词。

(3) fit还可组成一些短语。
①fit in/into。 in一般用作副词，into为介词。可表示：
A.“放进去”
- Can we fit in any more chairs?
我们还能放进一些椅子吗？ - The frame is too small for the picture to fit in .
相框太小，相片放不进去。 - The cork is too big to fit into the neck of the bottle.
瓶塞太大，塞不进瓶口。 - Can you manage to fit the table into the dining room?

B.“给……安排时间”
- Do you think the doctor can fit in any more visits this week?

③fit (sb.) like a glove意为“合身极了；适合极了”。
- Aren't I lucky? The only dress in the shop that I fancied fits me like a glove!

④fit on意为“装上，穿上”，fit可以是及物动词也可是不及物动词。
- Can you manage to fit the new screen window on ?

⑤fit out意为“给……供应(置备服装等)；把……装备起来”。
- I went to a large clothes shop where they could fit you out for anything.
我去了一家大服装店，在那里他们能满足你在服装上的任何要求。 - It is quite expensive nowadays to fit a child out with all it needs when it is going away to school.

①“适合，使满意”，用作及物动词，有时也作不及物动词。

我们最好确定好日期，星期天晚上你方便吗？ - It's hard to cook a meal that suits everybody.

②“使适合”，常可与fit换用。
- Take care to suit the punishment to the crime.
要注意使罚与罪相一致。 - A good teacher always suits/fits lessons to the taste of his pupils.

(5) suit也可组成一些短语。
①(be) suited for/to意为“适合，适宜于……”。
- I'm afraid he is not quite suited for the kind of work he is doing.
我担心他不太适合他现在做的那种工作。 - This kind of car is not well suited for/to rough roads.
这种汽车不很适于在崎岖不平的路面上跑。 - We are not suited to each other temperamentally.
我们的性格彼此不合。 - Is she suited to the fieldwork there?

②be suited也可接不定式to be。
- You're not suited to be a teacher; you're suited to be an engineer.

③suit down to the ground意为“完全适合，合身”。
- The job/dress suits him down to the ground .

④suit one's actions to one's words是“说到做到，言行一致”的意思。
- The father said he would smack the child if he disobeyed and he suited his actions to his words .
这位父亲说，如果这孩子不听话他就会打他的耳光，他还真的说到做到了。 - We should always act in such a way as to suit our actions to our words .

⑤suit oneself意为“随自己的便；随自己的心意”。
- You can suit yourself whether you go or stay.
还是留，随你的便。 - In my opinion you should not join them but suit yourself .
