gait, pace, step, stride 与 walk 这些词都有“走路”的意思。

(1)gait指走路的速度、步伐、样式等，作名词，常以单数形式出现。

• He is going home with an unsteady gait .
  他摇摇晃晃地走回家去。

 (2) pace指步行测量或在小范围内来回走动。

• We paced out one hundred metres and then we had a race.
  我们步测出100米距离之后开始赛跑。
• The tiger was pacing the floor of its cage.
  那只老虎在笼中来回走动。

 (3) step指为了某种目的而走动几步。

• He stepped out of the elevator and turned left.
  他出了电梯向左转弯。
• Tom stepped aside and let the expert take it over.
  汤姆让到一边，让专家来接手。

 (4) stride指大步匆忙地行走，也指精力充沛、昂首阔步地走。

• He strode angrily into the classroom.
  他气愤地跨进教室。
• China is striding ahead in her economic construction.
  中国正在经济建设方面大步前进。

 (5) walk是通用词，泛指步行。

• After walking for four hours, we were beginning to flag.
  步行了四个小时以后，我们开始累了。
• He was walking towards town when I met him.
  我遇到他时，他正往镇上走去。
