(1) ①gigantic, titanic都是“巨大的”意思。gigantic侧重于大小、体积、面积及数量方面，也用于努力、威胁等；而titanic则侧重于努力、力量方面，有时也用于形体方面。

 (2) gargantuan意为“很大的，非常大的”，主要用于正式文体中。

 (3) prodigious意为“奇异的，巨大的，大得惊人的”。

• They spent a prodigious sum of money on the project.

 (4) ①immense意为“非常大的，巨大的”，可用于具体事物也可用于抽象事物。

• There has been an immense improvement in his health.
  他的健康有了非常大的改善。
• The immense square became a sea of flowers and happy faces.
  这个巨大的广场成了鲜花和笑脸的海洋。

②其他方面，还可用于an immense statue, an immense quantity of food, an immense living expense, an immense task/effort/gratitude, immense importance /satisfaction /force/influence/popularity /energy等。

 (5) enormous意为“巨大的，大得异乎寻常的”，常指大小、数量、数字等。

• It was an enormous house/meal/amount of money.
  那是一所巨大的房子/一顿大餐/一大笔的钱。
• There is an enormous difference between the two countries.
  这两个国家有巨大的差异。

＊又如：enormous rats, an enormous pair of motoring gloves, an enormous room, an enormous size；也可用于抽象事物，如：pity, pleasure, respect, losses, scale(规模)， distance, crime, question等。

 (6) colossal常指形体、程度、大小、数量等“巨大的，庞大的”。

• It was a colossal building/statue.
  那是一个庞大的建筑/雕塑。
